AskAway, a statewide cooperative service of Wisconsin libraries, builds on the long-time role of libraries as the primary source for general information and reliable answers. But with today's easy access to the Internet's vast resources, librarians are more important than ever because of their skill at finding the information you really need. AskAway brings the two together, providing 24/7 access to the information expertise of librarians. Go ahead and ask a question! The statewide availability of AskAway is made possible by an LSTA grant administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Like BadgerLink, AskAway is an online service that opens the vast resources of Wisconsin's libraries to all residents, no matter where or when they need information. The 24-hour-a-day AskAway service is staffed by the 24/7 Reference Consortium-a group of hundreds of libraries across the country that work together to provide this service-as well as local Wisconsin librarians who contribute their time to the consortium. Wisconsin residents benefit from this expanded service. Tighter state and local budgets make cooperative ventures like AskAway more vital than ever. AskAway is a new way of expanding a service that librarians have provided for years, and by joining a national consortium the costs are minimal for the high level of service customers receive. Libraries already provide many services people can access from outside of the physical library building, including online library catalogs, full-text of magazines, newspapers, books and other online resources. AskAway is just another way of expanding the services libraries already provide. You can access AskAway at www.winnefox.org/ask or through Ripon Public Library's website. You'll be provided with information and perspective about those issues and will be urged to call, write or email lawmakers on significant issues of interest. Your comments to elected officials can make a difference. Legislators have commented that most issues draw few comments and that as few as a half-dozen calls, letters, or emails from constituents can influence their decision-making. By signing up, you'll provide us the opportunity to quickly notify you about issues that develop so you can take action if you choose. This effective form of communication also helps hold down expenses. So make your voice heard. Sign up to participate today!
