NEWS FROM THE RIPON PUBLIC LIBRARY
March 2007
Magazine Update
Be sure to check out our great selection of new magazines!
Featured new magazine of March: "Woman's Day".
"Woman's Day" provides practical information to middle-class wives and mothers who may or may not be working outside the home. Regular features include the editor's column, and numerous tips on housekeeping, parenting, and family relationships. Many of the regular departments offer advice on a number of topics of concern to the thrifty woman; health nutrition and meal planning, home care, money management, crafts, travel, gardening, and decorating. The magazine's strengths are product and consumer information, inexpensive and practical fashions, and recipes.
Book Delivery Service for the Homebound
The Ripon Public Library is offering book delivery service for the homebound in the community. Books can be delivered on a once monthly schedule to patrons living within the city limits. The Library has a great selection of fiction, nonfiction, audiovisual, and largeprint materials. To sign up yourself or someone you know, please stop by the Library Circulation Desk or call the Library at 920-748-6160.
Spotlight on Library Services-Wireless Internet Access
The Ripon Public Library offers free wireless Internet access. Handouts are available at the circulation desk with basic information about the service, and information on configuring your Windows-based laptop to use our wireless service. This document provides additional information about the service.
Wireless access is available to both library patrons and visitors. A library or temporary use card is not currently required. There are no age requirements or restrictions; however, parents or guardians of children under 18 years of age should take responsibility in supervising their children's proper and safe use of the Internet.
How do I use this service?
In order to access the wireless Internet connection, you will need a notebook / laptop computer with either built-in wireless technology or a wireless network card. Other wireless devices (such as wireless-capable PDAs) might also work. The Library does not provide laptop computers for public use. Most newer computers will automatically detect and connect to an available wireless network. Although the handout includes basic information on configuring your computer's settings, you should consult your equipment's documentation for information on changing your equipment's network settings to connect to our network.
Where is this service available?
The wireless Internet connection is available anywhere within the library building, including the lower level meeting rooms.
Why / how is this service provided?
In keeping with the goals of the Ripon Public Library, offering wireless Internet access helps to provide the public with open access to informational, educational, and recreational materials and information sources. Potentially, it may also reduce the congestion which sometimes occurs with our public Internet stations.
The wireless Internet access is provided through the Library's existing high-speed T1 line and multiple wireless routers.
What are some advantages?
You won't spend any time waiting for an available Internet station - our wireless connection is always on, always available.
There are no limits on time or use with the wireless network (although we do request that users refrain from activities which may monopolize available bandwidth and interfere with other users).
Users may access the Internet from almost any location in the library - even a comfortable chair by the fireplace.
Are there any limitations?
Users are subject to existing Library policies concerning computer / Internet use and public behavior where applicable.
Printing is not possible through the wireless network - however, you may save your files to a floppy disk or recordable CD-ROM, or email them to a web-based email account, and then print them from one of our public Internet workstations. The Internet workstations allow you to open Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) files, and most image files, from floppy disk or CD-ROM.
Wireless access speed may be limited by the number of users simultaneously connected, your physical location in the building, and other factors over which the Library has no control.
Speak Up For Your Library
Sign up to receive a monthly email update on library issues and occasional alerts about legislation affecting libraries. You'll be provided with information and perspective about those issues and will be urged to call, write or email lawmakers on significant issues of interest.
Your comments to elected officials can make a difference. Legislators have commented that most issues draw few comments and that as few as a half-dozen calls, letters, or emails from constituents can influence their decision-making.
By signing up, you'll provide us the opportunity to quickly notify you about issues that develop so you can take action if you choose. This effective form of communication also helps hold down expenses.
